Takshashila is considered a place of religious and historical sanctity by Jains and Buddhists. Chanakaya and Emperor Chandragupta studied at Takshashila. In 1980, it was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Some buildings were constructed by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, and some by the Gupta Empire and Emperor Harsha. Some famous places near Nalanda are – Rajgir, Bodhgaya, Gaya and Pawapuri.
